Also known as Lasix or Salix, Furosemide is classified as a loop diuretic, meaning it acts specifically on the ascending loop of Henle in the kidney. Furosemide is PetCareRx' top-selling diuretic drug. Available in tablet dosages of 12.5mg, 20mg, 40mg, 50mg, and 80mg. Furosemide is used in the treatment of a variety of pet diseases, including congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, kidney disease, pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), ascites (fluid in the abdomen), hyperkalemia (high potassium levels in the blood), and certain kinds of tissue edema (swelling). The usual dosage of Furosemide in dogs and cats is 1 to 2mg per pound, administered at 6 to 8 hour intervals once or twice a day. As it is a diuretic drug, Furosemide will cause your pet to urinate more often, but if it experiences other side effects such as weakness, vomiting and nausea, depression, seizures, itching and rash, you should contact a veterinarian immediately.

In comparison, Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic, engineered to prohibit the secretion of potassium into your pet's urine. Spironolactone is mainly used in the treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF) and ascites. As this drug promotes high potassium levels in your pet's body, it may cause side effects of electrolyte imbalance (i.e. high potassium and low sodium). It should not be used on animals that already possess high potassium levels.
