Popular Halloween Makeup How-to Videos

[ 1 ] September 30, 2010

Have you decided what you want to dress up as for Halloween? Last year, I was Cleopatra. And the year before that, I was a corpse bride. And not to brag or anything, but I won Best Female Costume at FS both years, hehe!  I can’t take all the credit though; YouTube really helped with its Halloween makeup tutorials created by some seriously talented people.

To help you win best costume this year, I’ve compiled a list of popular Halloween makeup ideas and tutorials that you can use to finish off your look. Although some artists use high-end makeup brands, you can just use similar colors from home. Follow instructions to get a professional look without the price tag! Hey, maybe you can charge your friends to do theirs once you become a pro.

Here are my picks for the best Halloween makeup tutorials on YouTube:

Seducive Vampire by Michelle Phan

With the hype of Twilight still fresh, I see this look being a popular one this year. To make this look a little more dramatic, consider picking up hazel contact lenses – ’cause you know how light Edward’s eyes are after he’s eaten a good meal.

Half Dead Zombie by MakeupByRenRen

I gotta say: this look is pretty freaky. And for me, it’s not the hole in the head that makes the look; it’s the dirty teeth – grooooss!

Skull Mask by eRaness

I’m totally impressed by this video. When I think skeleton, I think drawn-in teeth over the lips and hollow-looking eyes. But this is taken to a whole new place. Half her face is already done, so she’ll show you how she did it. I so wanna try this one.

Cleopatra by kandeejohnson

That gold head piece really brings the look together. I used gold beads that we hang on the Christmas tree to make my own. Following this tutorial is pretty easy. And don’t worry about having the precise colors; something similar will do.

1920s Flapper by MissChievous

My favorite part about this look is how big your eyes look. I wouldn’t wear makeup like this every day, so for me, Halloween’s an excuse to go all out. For a costume party, your best prop is a martini glass – how convenient!

Captain Jack Sparrow by kandeejohnson

Guys, time to practice your crude jokes. For this look, you’ll be using makeup that’s slightly darker than your skin tone to make it look like you’re dirty. Hey, that means you don’t have to be super precise with the blending – bonus.

Corpse Bride by MissChievous

This is my favorite look. This makeup is inspired by Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride – hence the heart-shaped lips – I love that look! It may seem a little complicated, but the tutorial’s pretty easy to follow.

So, now that you’ve got the tools for a spooktacular look at your fingertips, which of these looks would you try?

3 Outfits Inspired by Mad Men

[ 1 ] September 29, 2010

Mad Men mania is here to stay. The brooding, complicated characters haven’t stopped the style savvy from dressing like the well-groomed cast, and the influence of Mad Men on women’s fashion has shown up on runways across the world.

If you’d like to get on-board with this 60s vintage craze, and you’d certainly be crazy not to, keep reading for our tips on how to dress like the women on Mad Men (and one of the gents, as well):

Betty Draper

With a super-rebellious daughter and an unfaithful, emotionally distant husband (or ex-husband, but we’ll see how long that lasts), it’s no wonder Betty takes solace in her wardrobe.

When looking for a Mad Men-inspired dress, check out whites, uncomplicated floral designs or solid colors. Also consider belted dresses with ruffles and a deep collar to show off your neckline.

Left to right: Only Have Ivory For You Dress, $62.99, ModCloth; Genuine Freshwater Pearl Earrings, $30, Banana Republic; Four String Of Pearlescent Beads, $6.80, Forever21; Heel of Fortune, $39.99, ModCloth; White Poise Gloves, $12.99, ModCloth.

Coupons to use before you shop: Banana Republic.

Pete Campbell

This divisive character is more playful and preppy than Don Draper, so his Mad Men style is much more suitable for younger men to emulate. Grays and browns are too boring for him – he prefers Navy.

If you’re built like Pete – he’s not the tallest fellow – wear suspenders to add some length to your torso. And don’t worry, your natural charm will take care of the rest.

Left to right: Slim Fit Non-Iron French Cuff Shirt, $69.99, Banana Republic; Tailored Navy Wool Two-Button Blazer, $355, Banana Republic; Tailored Italian Wool Suit Pant, $150, Banana Republic; Double Woven Knit Suspenders, $14.99, Urban Outfitters; Gravis Rieder Penny Loafer, $78, Urban Outfitters.

Coupons to use before you shop: Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters.

Joan Holloway

Joan’s bombshell look is all about embracing her curves. Her style of Mad Men clothing is much more va-va-voom than Betty’s, but still modest and professional. Switch up figure-hugging sweater dresses with pencil skirts and tailored blouses.

Dress in classy shades of purple, red or blue and stray from busy patterns – Joan loves simple, bold colors.

Left to right: Design History Plum Sweater Dress, $99, Bluefly; Scoop Pocket Knee Coat, $79.92, Alloy; Lauren by Ralph Lauren, $79.99, Piperlime; Tassel Detail Necklace, $7.80, Forever21; Cute Flower Stud Earring, $3.80, Forever 21.

Coupons to use before you shop: Alloy, Bluefly, Piperlime.

Mad Men fashion is sweeping the country – have any pointers on how to keep up with this style? Share with us!

How to “Make it Work” Everyday

[ 3 ] September 28, 2010

Whenever I look in my closet, and I’m at a loss of what to wear, I think to myself – WWTGD?

Tim Gunn is the mentor to the designers of the hit television series Project Runway. He’s a key personality in the fashion industry and is famous for giving his educated and honest style opinion.

On the show, Gunn’s favorite phrase for struggling designers is, “Make it work” – meaning do anything and everything to look fabulous.

It’s important to look and feel your best each day, so, as you read further, we’ll give you tips on applying this phrase to your daily life.

So let’s get started. It’s time to make it work!

Do’s…

Clothes that fit and flatter:

It is important to know what works for your body shape. For example, a v-neck sweater may be more flattering on you than a boat neck. If you know what looks best before you go shopping, picking out clothes that work will be easier, and your experience will be much less frustrating.

Also, what looks great on someone else might not look good on you. It’s all about trying different things and being open to change. That top that you immediately dismissed? It might just flatter you perfectly. So try, and try again!

Giving trends a chance:

Trying out new trends is a great idea. Choose one or two of your favorite trends of the season and add them to your wardrobe. It’s easiest to start with accessories such as bags, scarves and shoes. But, if you’re really into a particular trend, buy yourself a statement piece and match it with basics from your wardrobe.

Mixing trends can be tricky, but, if you do it right, it can look very polished and chic. Here’s an example outfit combining two fall 2010 trends - animal print and lace:

From top left to right: ‘Tribute Too 105′ Platform Pumps, $704, Bluefly; Knitted Slouchy Cocoon Jumper, $80, TopShop; Megan Cat Eye Sunglasses, $98, bebe; Plain Jane Satchel, $69.99, Nine West; Legging jeans (True Black Wash), $69.50, Gap; Full Tilt Lace Heart Ring, $3.99, Tilly’s.

Coupons to use before you shop: Gap, bebe, Bluefly, Tilly’s.

Keeping it appropriate for the occasion:

Always remember the taste level of an outfit. You don’t want to show up to a children’s event wearing a low-cut top. We all know where that got Katy Perry

So, it’s important to keep in mind where you’re going and with whom you’re going to be interacting. Always err on the side of caution; if you find yourself questioning the appropriateness of an outfit, skip it. If you’re really not sure, remember this rule: if you’re showing some skin on the bottom, keep it covered on top (and vice versa). When all else fails, just ask an honest friend!

Don’t's…

Clothes that don’t fit and flatter:

Frumpy, baggy clothes may be comfortable, but wearing oversized clothing makes you look oversized. That being said, wearing clothes that are too tight will make you look bigger, too.

It’s all about balance and playing up your best features. Don’t be strict about size, either. Take a few sizes in your range to the fitting room to make sure you head home with the perfect fit – not what size you think you should be.

Trying out too many trends at once:

Pulling off a combination of trendy bold prints, fabrics and colors isn’t easy – unless you’re as fashionable as Rachel Zoe or Olivia Palermo. If you insist on trying, keep it understated as seen with the animal print/lace combo above.

When fashion disasters happen…

We try to look our best everyday, but sometimes we’re faced with a “make it work” moment.

For those times, be prepared with a fashion emergency kit. Here are the basic items you should always keep nearby:

These tools will give you what you need to “carry on:”

  1. Double Sided Tape: To hold everything in place.
  2. Clear Nail Polish: To stop a pantyhose run.
  3. Hair Elastics: In case of a bad hair day.
  4. Needle and Thread: To sew on any buttons that pop off.
  5. Bobby Pins: To fix any hair problems.
  6. Safety Pins: For quick fixes.
  7. Scissors: To cut off any loose strings.
  8. Stain Pen: In case of any food accidents.

Do you have any “make it work” tips to share? We’d love to hear ‘em!
