Free New Pet Exam at Banfield Pet Hospital

[ 0 ] August 31, 2010

Bringing home a new cat or dog is both exciting and costly. As much as those balls of fur are going to love and cuddle you, they’re not going to pay their own vet bill. Luckily, Banfield Pet Hospital is offering a free new pet exam at their PetSmart locations.

Simply fill out the form, print out the coupon and take it to your local Banfield location. You could try to teach Sir Fluffsalot how to get a job, but they’re probably too busy being adorable. This is much easier.

2010 Fall Fashion Trends for Women

[ 0 ] August 31, 2010

Attention, trendsetters! If you’re looking for the top trends to rock next season – then look no further! I’ve got all the hot looks for Fall 2010 covered. So, you can stay on top of the fashion trends and (of course) be the envy all your friends.

Here are four hot trends for Fall 2010 in fashion. I’ve gathered some of my favorite pieces to give you ideas on how to wear each look:

Grey

The color grey is usually associated with lazy day sweats and the cold. But, this season, push those pressumptions aside because Grey is officially HOT! Pair this neutral with pops of colour or other neutrals. You can even mix up different shades of grey. Or, if you’re super trendy, pair your favorite grey piece with another fall trend.

Left to right: Embellished Vintage Cardigan, $59.50, Gap; Tassel Ballet Flats, $32.99, Gap; Silk Ruffle Dress, $69.50, Gap.

Coupon to use before you shop: Gap.

Military

There isn’t one fashion magazine or blog that hasn’t named the military trend as one of the must haves for the season – and, trust me, I read A LOT of fashion blogs and magazines. So, what are you waiting for? If you’re the trendsetter I know you are, you need one of these pieces in your wardrobe.

Left to right: Chelsea Small Shoulder Bag, $150,  Banana Republic; Wanted Field Boot, $68, Urban Outfitters; Belted Pouch Pocket Jacket, $150, Banana Republic.

Coupons to use before you shop: Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters.

Animal Print

This one’s my personal favorite. But, that’s probably because I’ve always had a weakness for animal print. This trend looks best when it’s used as an accent to an already fabulous outfit. Try a cute scarf, shoe or clutch to add a pop. But please, before you try this trend remember – head to toe animal print is not cute!!! Thank-you.

Left to right: Spots and Skulls Silk Scarf, $475, Saks Fifth Avenue; Samie Animal Print Ballet Flat, $98, Banana Republic; Cotton Animal Print Cardi, $69.50, Banana Republic.

Coupons to use before you shop: Banana Republic, Saks Fifth Avenue.

Lace

Finally, we come to the lace trend. This is another one that has been talked about everywhere in the fashion world. This is a great trend to try, especially for evening wear. Similar to animal print, you may want to add lace accessories to your outfit to help spice it up. And, for the daring trendsetter, try mixing lace with a military piece to give your outfit an interesting contrast between feminine and masculine.

Left to right: Greenwich Lace Tankdress,  $138, Saks Fifth Avenue; Tublar Lace Legging, $98, 7 for All Mankind; Sleeveless Genette Vest, $54, Guess.

Coupons to use before you shop: Guess, Saks Fifth Avenue, 7 for All Mankind.

Did we miss a trend? What style are you most looking forward to this fall?

Fall 2010 Fashion Trends for Men

[ 1 ] August 30, 2010

With Autumn quickly and thankfully approaching, it’s come time to retire your shorts and flip flops. Hey, you can try to keep wearing them, but be prepared for those around you to be stricken with extreme second-hand embarrassment.

If you’ve been looking forward to trying out a new men’s fashion trend, Fall & Winter 2010 is your time to shine. We’ve assembled the best fall trends that any style-minded gent has to look forward to. Check them out:

90s Comeback

We all really should have seen this coming when plaid came roaring back in the late 2000s. Grunge might not quite be all the rage again, but notes of the 90s are starting to appear in all faucets of fashion. For a cozy, nostalgic fall look, stick with hand-aged denim jackets and a decent pair of sneakers or boots. If you’re getting tired of plaid but still want a patterned shirt, mix it up with gingham or paisley. Just keep the signed Spice Girls t-shirt at home.

From left to right: Gingham Woven Shirt, $24.90, Forever 21; Well-Worn Denim Jacket, $79.95, The Gap; Men’s Straight Fit Jeans, $29.50, Old Navy; Vans Ripstop Sneaker, $65.00, Urban Outfitters; Nylon Web Belt, $12, Urban Outfitters.

Coupons to use: Old Navy, Urban Outfitters.

Military Cool

This buttoned-up, slim-silhouetted look was everywhere on the Fall/Winter 2010 runways. A new decade calls for a new color palette, so be on the lookout for pieces in navy and army green. A wool jacket with a fitted waist should be the center of your wardrobe; pair it with nice sweater, simple dark slacks and aviator boots. Hey, it’s easier than enlisting, right?

From left to right: D Anderson Collection Jacket, $108, Urban Outfitters; Merino Half Zip Sweater, $59.95, The Gap; Classic Straight Leg Jeans, $37.90, Forever 21; Bed Stu Artillery Boot, $125.00, Urban Outfitters; Logo Canvas Carry All, $24.90, Forever 21.

Coupons to use: Urban Outfitters.

Dapper Chic

Thanks to pop culture phenomena like Inception and Mad Men, gents are rediscovering vests, three piece suits and classic hairdos. The pressed-to-perfection ensembles of Dom Cobb and Don Draper might be a little too stuffy for everyday wear, but there are easy solutions to modernize them. A simple tie with an un-tucked shirt and blazer is a great casual look, especially when worn with a straight pair of khakis. Don’t infiltrate dreams without them.

From left to right: BDG Shrunken Blazer, $68, Urban Outfitters; UO Silk Tie, $19, Urban Outfitters; Solid Tailored Shirt, $49.50, The Gap; Tailored Khakis, $49.50, The Gap; Men’s Rockport Margin, $89.95, Shoebuy.com.

Coupons to use: Shoebuy, Urban Outfitters.

Cheap and Easy Dorm Meals – Beyond Mac & Cheese

[ 1 ] August 27, 2010

It’s bound to happen. Halfway through your semester, the cafeteria college dorm food starts to lose its luster. But never fear! When dorm snacks and food get dull, here are a few recipes for impressing your palette and your new friends without spending a fortune on dining out.

Scrumptious Starters

It sneaks up on you when you least expect it, damaging your health and budget. It’s the Freshman 15. To keep healthy, simply add veggies to your diet. One easy idea is to slice tomatoes and sprinkle basil on top. Add a dash of salt and pepper, and voila! They’re perfect eaten hot or cold.

College is a time to growup and mature, but eating-wise it helps to look back on your childhood. Ants on a Log using celery, peanut butter and raisins are not only delicious, but pretty healthy too. It’s just enough to keep your stomach from growling in the middle of a lecture.

Rice

A rice cooker is usually allowed in dorm rooms, but check just in case. I found an affordable one at Cooking.com (use our coupons to save 10%). Your friends can even get in on the action, because 3 cups of rice goes a long way!

Brown rice is rich with nutrients and goes with pretty much everything, so explore! Try raisins and grapes, feta cheese and tomatoes, or add a bit of rice to those leftover fast food burritos from last night.

Main Event – Gourmet Mac & Cheese

Your best bet is to find dorm room food to cook in a microwave. Yes, I said “beyond mac & cheese,” but hear me out. Put pasta in a bowl with salted water and cook in the microwave for about 10 minutes. Once finished, pour cold water over it to shock the pasta and stop it from overcooking and turning to mush. At this point, stir in shredded cheese and salsa, hot sauce, or apples and fennel for a truly unique bite. You can get other amazing microwave dishes at BusyCooks.About.com.

Dessert (in 5 minutes or less)

Rosemary Bananas are the perfect complement to your takeout chicken or a treat during a study break. Most dorm kitchens have a toaster oven, which means you can be eating this dish in 5 minutes or less.

  • Cover tray in tin foil & brush with butter
  • Slice bananas in half & brush with a tiny amount of butter for caramelization
  • Brush with a tiny bit of maple syrup & sprinkle on some rosemary
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes & enjoy!

For a healthy dessert or snack alternative, grab some fresh fruit and protein powder. Throw it in the blender and enjoy a delicious smoothie anytime. If an actual blender isn’t allowed, check to see if a smaller hand blender is. All in all it’ll be way less than your on-campus fast food juice.

To end, one of the best purchases you can make is at least one good cookbook. I liked Gourmet Meals in Crappy Kitchens from Amazon.com. But just because your kitchen’s crappy doesn’t mean your meals have to be. And if you’re totally useless in the dorm kitchen, make friends with the culinary students. That pays off big time.
